A Falling Table

Just like Rem Koolhaas’ architecture the table evokes an uncanny feeling, it projects the illusion that it floats without proper support, that it could fall over at any moment. This illusion is achieved by juxtaposing a thick table top with slender warped legs that twist upwards until they are above the starting point of the next leg. At first glance you would think that the table would rotate to the right and collapse, but simulations show that it remains upright, even under extreme loads.

Every part that is touched feels warm, while everything structural feels cold. To achieve a stark contrast in materials like in the Villa dall’ Ava the structure is made out of hollow stainless steel profiles and the tabletop is made out of solid walnut wood. To make sure the legs are as slim as possible while retaining the strength to support the tabletop a lot of calculations and simulations had to be done. The result is a table with seemingly impossibly thin warped legs.
